A chafing lamp is the small burner placed beneath a chafing dish to keep its water bath hot, traditionally fuelled by gel, liquid alcohol, or oil. Also called a flambé lamp in some contexts, it provides a low, steady flame suited to hours of gentle heating rather than cooking. Modern catering often uses electric heating elements instead, removing the open-flame risk. Where fuel lamps are used, staff must handle refills carefully, keep flames away from decorations and guests, and never leave them unattended. The lamp is a small component, but safe buffet service depends on it working reliably throughout the event.
