Borborygmus is the rumbling or gurgling sound produced by the movement of gas and fluid through the intestines. It results from normal peristalsis, the muscular contractions that propel food along the digestive tract, and becomes louder when the stomach is empty or when gas is generated by fermentation of undigested carbohydrates by gut bacteria. Common triggers include hunger, rapid eating, carbonated drinks, and high-fibre foods. While usually harmless, persistent or painful borborygmus alongside other symptoms can accompany irritable bowel syndrome, malabsorption, or food intolerances, and is worth mentioning to a clinician if it disrupts daily life.
