An extreme aversion to food, a term from older medical vocabulary describing patients who turned from eating with disgust or dread. The word’s Greek roots convey loathing, and physicians applied it to the profound food refusal seen in severe illness, melancholia, and what would now be diagnosed as eating disorders or depression. Like many nineteenth-century clinical terms, it described the visible symptom without probing the mechanism, grouping together conditions modern medicine carefully separates. Its interest today is historical and linguistic, marking how doctors once named the suffering they could see but not yet explain. The patients it described needed what modern care provides: investigation of the underlying cause, whether gastrointestinal, neurological, or psychiatric, paired with nutritional support while treatment proceeds.
