The United Kingdom’s former pictorial guide to healthy eating, presenting recommended food-group proportions as a tilted plate or pie chart. It divided foods into five segments, with starchy carbohydrates and fruits and vegetables occupying the largest shares, protein foods and dairy smaller ones, and foods high in fat and sugar a tiny sliver, visually teaching that balance is about proportions. Introduced in the 1990s, it gave schools, dietitians, and public health campaigns a simple, memorable tool. It has since been replaced by the Eatwell Guide, which updated the science and the visuals, but the Balance of Good Health remains a landmark in nutrition communication, demonstrating how a single image can convey dietary guidance more effectively than pages of text.
