A condition in which the colon loses its muscular tone and effective contractions, leading to severe constipation and potentially intestinal obstruction. Without peristaltic drive, waste stagnates, the bowel distends, and the normal urge to defecate fades. Causes include chronic laxative abuse that exhausts the bowel’s own motility, neurological disorders, hypothyroidism, and prolonged immobility. Management focuses on retraining the bowel: withdrawing stimulant laxatives, establishing regular toileting habits, increasing fiber and fluids gradually, encouraging physical activity, and treating underlying disease. In severe cases, careful medical supervision is essential since abrupt changes can precipitate impaction. The condition illustrates the bowel’s use-it-or-lose-it nature and the risks of overriding its natural rhythms with chronic chemical stimulation.
