Waxed paper is paper coated with a thin layer of wax — used in food wrapping and cooking much like greaseproof paper, with which it is often equated. The wax coating resists moisture and grease, making it suitable for wrapping sandwiches, cheese, and butter, interleaving burger patties, and lining tins for cold preparations. Unlike greaseproof or baking parchment, it is not heatproof: the wax melts in a hot oven, so it must never be used for baking. It is a traditional, low-cost wrapping that keeps food from drying out and stops sticky items adhering. Modern silicone-coated baking papers have taken over its oven roles, leaving waxed paper to cold wrapping.
