A premium brand is a product line positioned as superior in quality to competitors and priced accordingly above the market average. In food, premiumisation trades on provenance, craftsmanship, superior ingredients, and packaging: artisan cheeses, single-origin chocolates, aged balsamics, and organic ranges that promise discernibly better eating. The strategy works because food is experiential: consumers pay for taste, story, and status, and the premium tier captures higher margins than commodity competition allows. But the positioning must be earned: blind tastings that fail to distinguish premium from standard erode trust, and “premium” without substantiation is mere puffery that regulators and reviewers punish. Successful premium brands maintain quality relentlessly, since the price premium buys heightened expectations, and disappointment at premium prices damages more than disappointment at value prices.
