An oven glove is a thickly padded mitt or glove worn to protect the hands when placing dishes into, or removing them from, a hot oven. Typically quilted from cotton with heat-resistant filling, sometimes with silicone grip patterns, it insulates against temperatures that would cause instant burns on contact with racks, trays, and roasting tins. Good design covers the wrist and part of the forearm, fits either hand, and provides enough dexterity to grip securely, since dropping a hot dish is as dangerous as touching one. Silicone gloves offer higher heat resistance and waterproofing but less flexibility. Food safety guidance treats burns prevention as part of kitchen safety alongside knife skills and hygiene: an oven glove kept within reach of the oven, dry and undamaged, since damp or worn insulation conducts heat straight through.
