Orange squash is a concentrated sweetened drink made from orange juice or orange flavouring, sold as a syrup to be diluted with water by the consumer. A staple of British households, lunchboxes, and school canteens for generations, it offers an economical, shelf-stable alternative to ready-to-drink juice. Traditional formulations are high in sugar, though the market now spans no-added-sugar versions sweetened with sucralose, acesulfame-K, or steviol glycosides, responding to sugar taxes and health concerns. Some squashes contain real fruit juice and added vitamin C; cheaper ones rely on flavourings, colours, and citric acid. Dentists have long flagged squash as a contributor to tooth decay and erosion in children, particularly when sipped throughout the day from bottles, advising dilution as directed and consumption with meals rather than between them.
