A nutrient profile sets out the nutritional composition of a food: its content of energy, macronutrients, vitamins, minerals, and other components of interest. It is the factual foundation beneath nutrition labels, dietary analysis software, and food composition databases such as the UK’s McCance and Widdowson tables and the USDA’s FoodData Central. Dietitians use nutrient profiles to assess diets and plan menus, while manufacturers use them to benchmark products against competitors and reformulation targets. The profile of a single food only becomes meaningful in dietary context, since no food is nutritionally complete and balance emerges across the whole diet. Compiling accurate profiles demands representative sampling and validated laboratory analysis, because natural variation in crops, breeds, and processing can shift values substantially.
