The Humanitarian Daily Ration (HDR) is the packaged emergency food ration designed to be airdropped by military and aid agencies into famine and disaster zones — famously dropped over Afghanistan in 2001. Each sealed packet supplies a full day’s nutrition (around 2,200 kcal) as culturally neutral, ready-to-eat food requiring no cooking or water: typically bean or lentil stews, rice, biscuits, and condiments, with vegetarian contents to respect dietary restrictions. The bright packaging is designed to be visible on the ground — though distinguishing food packets from ordnance proved tragically problematic. HDRs are a last-resort lifeline for populations cut off from all supply — expensive, logistically heroic, and sometimes the only food there is.
