A hotplate is a flat metal surface heated — usually electrically, sometimes by gas — for cooking food directly or keeping it hot. The laboratory hotplate brings beakers to the boil; the catering hotplate keeps plated meals warm on the pass; the domestic single-burner hotplate serves caravans, dormitories, and site kitchens. Industrial versions — griddles, planchas, heated gantries — scale the principle up. The virtues are simplicity and controllability: a flat, even heat with a thermostat dial. The hazard is the deceptive surface — a hotplate looks no different hot or cold, so burns are common, and in food service the tepid middle ground breeds bacteria. Simple tool, strict discipline.
