Home-baked describes food — bread, cakes, biscuits, pies — baked by hand in a domestic kitchen or small bakery, in individual or small-batch quantities, as opposed to factory-produced goods. The term carries powerful connotations: care, tradition, freshness, and flavour that mass production supposedly cannot match — which is why manufacturers and retailers borrow it liberally for products merely finished or “styled” to look artisanal. True home baking means small ovens, real butter, and recipes passed down or improvised; its virtues are freshness and individuality, its limits consistency and shelf life. Trading standards in some countries police the use of “home-baked” and similar claims on commercial products to prevent misleading shoppers.
