A health trainer is a community-based adviser who acts as a bridge between health professionals and the public — giving one-to-one support to people who want to eat better, move more, stop smoking, or drink less. Working in neighbourhoods, GP surgeries, and community centres, trainers help clients set realistic goals, find local activities and services, and stay motivated through the difficult middle weeks of behaviour change. The role was developed to reach people who rarely engage with formal healthcare — particularly in deprived areas where health inequalities bite hardest. By meeting people where they are, literally and figuratively, health trainers translate public-health advice into personal, achievable plans.
