Evaluation is the act of examining and calculating the quantity or level of something — systematic appraisal against criteria. In food and nutrition it takes many forms: evaluating a product’s sensory quality, a programme’s effectiveness, a diet’s adequacy, a supplier’s compliance. Good evaluation is structured — defined objectives, chosen methods, measured outcomes — whether it is a taste panel scoring a reformulation or a public-health team judging whether a fortification programme reduced deficiency. The results feed decisions: launch or reformulate, continue or stop, comply or enforce. Evaluation differs from mere measurement in its judgement: it asks not just “how much?” but “how good, and against what standard?” It is the discipline that keeps food businesses and nutrition programmes honest — the check that claims meet evidence.
