Ergogenic describes a stimulant — or any substance, practice, or aid — that gives greater energy or improved mental capacity, enhancing work output. The term’s home is sports science, where ergogenic aids span the proven (caffeine, creatine, bicarbonate), the plausible (nitrates, beta-alanine), the dubious (most herbal “energy” blends), and the banned (anabolic steroids, EPO, stimulants on the WADA list). The classification turns on evidence and ethics: an ergogenic effect demonstrated in trials is sports nutrition; the same effect via a prohibited drug is doping. Food and supplement regulation polices the boundary, and athletes navigate it carefully since contaminated supplements have ended careers. The word comes from the Greek for work-producing — and the ergogenic question is always the same: does it genuinely improve performance, and at what cost?
