Enteropathy is any disorder of the intestine — the umbrella term for diseases of the gut wall. It covers the infectious, the autoimmune, and the structural: coeliac disease is a gluten-sensitive enteropathy, where the immune system flattens the villi; environmental enteropathy blunts the gut lining of children in unsanitary settings, driving malnutrition; protein-losing enteropathy leaks plasma proteins through a damaged wall. The common thread is a failing intestinal barrier or absorptive surface, and the common consequence is malabsorption — of nutrients, of energy, of growth itself. Diagnosis runs through endoscopy, biopsy, and absorption tests; treatment addresses the cause while nutrition support bridges the gap. The word’s breadth is its utility: when the intestine is diseased but the precise label is pending, enteropathy says what is known.
