Cibophobia is an intense fear or aversion to food, ranging from anxiety about eating in general to fear of specific foods, textures, or swallowing. It differs from anorexia nervosa, where the fear centres on weight gain; cibophobia may follow a choking incident, food poisoning, or develop alongside anxiety disorders. Sufferers restrict their diets severely, risking malnutrition, weight loss, and social isolation around meals. Treatment involves psychological therapy, often cognitive-behavioural approaches with gradual exposure, alongside dietetic support to rebuild adequate nutrition. Early recognition matters, as prolonged avoidance entrenches both the fear and the nutritional deficits.
