A cheeseboard has two meanings: the flat board, usually wood, slate, or marble, on which cheese is presented, and the selection of cheeses served on it. A well-composed cheeseboard offers variety across milk types, textures, and intensities, perhaps a soft brie, a blue, a hard aged cheese, and a goat’s cheese, with accompaniments such as grapes, chutney, nuts, and crackers. Cheeses are best served at room temperature to release their aromas, and the board is traditionally offered after dessert in Britain or before it in France. Thoughtful portioning keeps it a tasting pleasure rather than an excessive course.
