The Germany-CGIAR++ Science and Impact Hub runs a joint PhD programme that connects German scientific expertise with the global CGIAR++ research partnership: CGIAR, the World Vegetable Center and the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe). The Hub is commissioned by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through GIZ, hosted at the Landscape Alliance’s CIFOR office in Bonn and run with the Council for Tropical and Subtropical Agricultural Research (ATSAF e.V.).
What is offered: the Hub awards 10 PhD scholarships. Each pays €1,800 per month for three years, with a possible 12-month extension if progress shows the PhD can be finished within that extra year. Scholars may also request a research grant of up to €25,000 for costs linked to their PhD project, and join a scientific support programme of courses and seminars recognised by their university’s structured PhD programme.
Who can apply: applicants holding an MSc degree in Agricultural Sciences or a related field, with an above-average final grade. Each candidate must be enrolled at a German university and jointly supervised by a CGIAR++ researcher, with fieldwork set inside a CGIAR++ research programme or project. German nationality is not required, and applicants from CGIAR++ partner countries are welcome. Applications need a motivation letter, a tabular CV, a research proposal and an English proficiency certificate, plus supervision and hosting documents sent directly by the two supervisors.
How to apply: submit through the Hub’s application portal by 30 November 2026. Scholarships are awarded after the deadline, for PhD projects starting 1 March 2027.
