Fruit and some cheeses get their shine and staying power from thin layers of food-grade wax. Carnauba wax, beeswax, shellac, or paraffin are applied to citrus, apples, cucumbers, and cheese wheels to slow moisture loss, add gloss, reduce shrivelling, and stretch shelf life. Citrus and apples are routinely waxed because packing-house washing strips away the fruit’s natural bloom, and the coating replaces that lost protection. Only food-grade waxes may be used, and several markets require the treatment to be declared on the label. In some postharvest systems the wax also carries fungicide, so formulation choice sits at the crossroads of appearance, storage performance, and regulatory compliance.
