Water pollution

When toxic chemicals or waste matter contaminate water resources, harming aquatic life and anything that drinks or contacts the water, that is water pollution. For the food sector the damage lands directly: tainted water poisons aquaculture stocks, contaminates irrigated crops, and carries heavy metals, pesticides, algal toxins, or pathogens into what people eat. Industrial discharge, farm runoff, sewage, and mining effluent are the usual culprits. Shellfish growing areas are classified and monitored for exactly this reason, irrigation and process water face quality standards, and factories treat incoming water as a critical control point — one bad intake can ruin whole production lots.
