Wastes
Unusable, unwanted, or discarded materials resulting from food processing operations, consisting of solids such as peels, pomace, feathers, bones, trimmings, and sludges, as well as unrecoverable liquids and packaging. In the food industry, wastes arise at every stage from application of processing procedures, and their disposal carries both cost and environmental liability. Modern plants increasingly practise valorisation rather than simple disposal: whey becomes protein powders, fruit pomace becomes fibre ingredients, spent grain becomes animal feed, and fats become biodiesel feedstock. This shift cuts disposal costs and environmental impact while creating new revenue, and waste segregation at source, plus clear distinction between by-products and true waste, is now part of good manufacturing practice.
