Vinasse
The liquid residue remaining in the still after distillation in the manufacture of spirits — the spent liquor left behind once ethanol has been recovered from fermented feedstocks such as wines or molasses. Vinasse is rich in organic matter, potassium, and minerals, and is widely used as a fertilizer and soil conditioner, returning nutrients to fields; it is also a feedstock for biogas production and, after treatment, animal feed. However, its high organic load, acidity, and salt content make uncontrolled discharge an environmental hazard to waterways. Sustainable management — fertigation at agronomic rates, concentration, or anaerobic digestion — turns this distillery waste stream into a resource within circular bioeconomy systems.
