Genus of fungi of the class Sordariomycetes. May be responsible for plant diseases and food spoilage. Verticillium psalliotae causes brown spots on cultured mushrooms, V. dahliae causes wilt in potatoes, and V. theobromae causes crown rot of bananas. V. lecanii is used as a biocontrol agent against various insect pests.
