Tylosin
A macrolide antibiotic produced by the bacterium Streptomyces fradiae. Tylosin treats chronic respiratory disease complex in chickens and infectious sinusitis in turkeys as its primary uses, and is also effective against cattle respiratory disease and swine dysentery; it is sometimes added to swine feed as a growth promoter. The drug leaves tissues slowly, so withdrawal periods run from 5 days in turkeys to 21 days in swine, ensuring residues deplete below maximum limits. Prudent veterinary-supervised use, with attention to antimicrobial resistance, governs its application in food-producing animals.
