Torulopsis
A superseded genus name for yeasts whose species have been reclassified into Candida. Torulopsis — once applied to asexual yeasts now recognized as Candida species — survives in older literature, where Torulopsis-named spoilage organisms of beverages and foods correspond to what modern laboratories identify as Candida. The renaming reflects molecular phylogenetics replacing morphology-based grouping. For food microbiologists consulting historical records the synonymy matters: a 1970s report of Torulopsis spoilage describes a Candida by today’s taxonomy, now identified by DNA sequencing rather than the phenotypic tests that defined Torulopsis.
