A systemic benzimidazole fungicide that controls a broad spectrum of fungal diseases on fruits, vegetables, and cereals. Absorbed by the plant, thiophanate-methyl converts internally to carbendazim — its active metabolite — giving both protective and curative action against rots, blights, and mildews. The US EPA places it in the lowest acute-toxicity category (Class IV); it is also sold as methyl thiophanate. Residue definitions include the carbendazim metabolite, and pre-harvest intervals with maximum residue limits keep dietary exposure within the acceptable daily intake. Rotating modes of action preserves its effectiveness against resistance.
