Swine fever

Swine fever is the collective term for devastating viral diseases of pigs, principally African swine fever and classical swine fever. Both are highly contagious among pigs, cause severe illness with high mortality, and are notifiable diseases subject to strict control by culling, movement restrictions, and biosecurity. Neither infects humans, so they are animal-health rather than food-safety emergencies, but outbreaks disrupt pork supply chains catastrophically and devastate farm economies. Prevention rests on biosecurity: controlling swill feeding, wild-boar contact, and the movement of animals and pork products.
