Sesame seeds
Sesame seeds are small, flat seeds with a nut-like flavour produced by sesame (Sesamum indicum). They are used as toppings for bakery products, flavourings, and as a source of sesame oils, and are also known as gingelly seeds. Rich in healthy fats, protein, and calcium, they are also among the major food allergens, so their presence must be declared on labels. Toasting deepens their flavour for many applications. Keep them in a cool, dark place for freshness. They are small but nutritionally mighty.
