Reporter genes
Reporter genes are genes encoding easily assayed products, placed under the control of regulatory elements from other genes so that researchers can follow the regulation and localization of expression. When the regulatory element switches on, the reporter produces a measurable signal, such as colour, fluorescence, or an enzyme activity. In food biotechnology they help study gene expression in starter cultures, spoilage organisms, and genetically modified microbes, revealing when and where particular genes are active during fermentation or processing. The technique turns invisible molecular events into data that guide strain improvement.
