Physics
Physics investigates how matter and energy interact, setting aside chemical change to focus on forces, motion, heat, electricity, light, and sound. Its classical branches of mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, optics, and acoustics, joined by modern quantum and particle physics, supply the quantitative language of engineering. In food manufacturing, physics governs nearly every unit operation: heat transfer sizes pasteurizers, fluid mechanics designs pumps and mixers, optics enables color sorting, and electromagnetic theory underlies microwave and ohmic heating. Applying physical models lets engineers scale processes safely from bench to factory, predicting performance before steel is ever cut.
