Paclobutrazol
Paclobutrazol is a heterocyclic organochlorine compound used as a plant growth regulator and fungicide. It inhibits the synthesis of gibberellins, the hormones that drive stem elongation, which consequently retards vegetative growth while enhancing flowering and fruiting. For this reason fruit trees, particularly mango and stone-fruit orchards, are often treated with paclobutrazol to control canopy size and promote uniform, profitable cropping. Applied as a soil drench, it is taken up by roots and persists in soil for extended periods, so dosing must be managed to avoid carryover effects. Residue limits on treated fruit are set by regulators, and monitoring ensures that the growth-regulating benefits do not compromise consumer safety.
