Litesse
Litesse is a branded bulking agent and fat substitute derived from polydextrose (with small amounts of sorbitol and citric acid) — only partially metabolised in the body (~1 kcal/g versus 4 for sugar, 9 for fat). It is used in low-calorie and reduced-fat bakery products, dairy products, salad dressings, confectionery and frozen desserts, giving bulk, mouthfeel, moisture retention and texture with far fewer calories than the fat or sugar it replaces — while contributing soluble-fibre-like effects. As a polydextrose-based ingredient it is well tolerated, though very high intakes can have a laxative effect; labelling follows polydextrose (E1200) rules.
