Labelling is the process of attaching labels to items to make them identifiable, together with all the information those labels carry. For foods this includes brand names, bar codes, ingredient lists (in descending order), quantitative ingredient declarations (QUID), compositional and nutritional details, date marks, storage instructions, business name and address, and illustrative matter. Accurate labelling is a legal requirement in most markets — governed in the EU by Regulation 1169/2011 and in the US by FDA rules — protecting consumers, enabling traceability and allergen warnings, and supporting fair competition; non-compliance triggers recalls, fines and border rejections, so label verification is a core food-business duty.
