Immunological effects
How exposure to a substance affects a body’s immune system — stimulating, suppressing, or misdirecting it, as in allergy. Food scientists consider these effects when assessing novel ingredients, contaminants, and additives: a new protein must not provoke harmful immune reactions, while some food components are studied for beneficial immune support. Safety assessment frameworks for novel foods explicitly include immunological endpoints, ensuring that innovation in ingredients does not come at the cost of immune health. Long-term feeding studies and post-market surveillance both contribute to this safety picture.
