Farmed fish
Fish produced by fish farming (aquaculture) for food. A wide range of species is farmed worldwide; key commercial species are carp, channel catfish, tilapia, yellowtail, Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout. Food safety issues include veterinary drug residues, feed contaminants and environmental pollutants. Aquaculture now supplies over half the fish humans eat, with salmon, tilapia, carp and shrimp dominating. Sustainability concerns centre on feed sourcing — fishmeal and fish oil from wild stocks — plus sea-lice treatments, escapes that interbreed with wild fish, and effluent; certification schemes such as ASC verify responsible practices.
