Drinking chocolate

Drinking chocolate is a hot beverage made by melting chocolate or cocoa into hot milk or water for a rich, comforting drink. It differs from ordinary hot cocoa in that traditional drinking chocolate is made by melting real chocolate into the liquid, giving a fuller body and silkier texture, while simpler mixes rely on cocoa powder, sugar, and milk solids. Regional styles vary widely: Spanish chocolate a la taza is thickened with starch until it is almost spoonable, Italian cioccolata calda is similarly dense, and French chocolat chaud favors intense dark chocolate with minimal dilution. Many commercial mixes add vanilla, cinnamon, or thickeners for convenience. Nutritionally it delivers the flavanols and theobromine of cocoa along with the sugar and fat of the recipe, so it is best enjoyed as an indulgence rather than a health drink.
