Debranning
Debranning is the process of removing bran from cereal grains, achieved by milling abrasion or by soaking in an alkali solution such as sodium hydroxide. It improves milling performance and yields bran by-products with potential as food ingredients, while stripping away microbes, mycotoxins and pesticide residues concentrated in the outer layers. The trade-off is nutritional: fibre, minerals and vitamins leave with the bran, and functional properties shift. Millers tune the intensity to balance safety, brightness and nutrition for each product. Recovered bran streams are increasingly valorized into fibre ingredients rather than discarded.
