Clenbuterol
Clenbuterol is a beta-agonist drug used in some countries as a growth promoter in slaughter animals, repartitioning nutrients toward lean muscle and away from fat. The concern is what lingers: residues in meat, concentrated in liver, can cause cardiovascular effects — tremor, palpitations — in consumers. High-profile poisoning scandals and trade bans followed, and the European Union, United States, China, and many others prohibit its use in food animals entirely. Surveillance programs test meat and offal routinely, because a banned beta-agonist in the food chain is both a health risk and a market-access disaster.
