Breadfruit is the green, starchy fruit of the breadfruit tree, Artocarpus communis (syn. A. altilis). It is an important subsistence crop of the Pacific islands, where its high starch content makes it a significant source of dietary energy, and it is also popular in the Caribbean and throughout the tropics. The fruit is typically roasted, boiled or fried and eaten as a vegetable, with a texture and flavour often compared to potato or fresh-baked bread. It can also be fermented or dried and milled into meal for longer storage, and the breadfruit seeds themselves are eaten too.
