Blights are plant diseases causing rapid withering of aerial parts — leaves, stems and fruits. They can cause severe economic and quality losses in crops: potato blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans infection of potatoes, famously triggered famine, while Fusarium head blight in wheat additionally threatens grain with mycotoxin contamination. Management combines resistant varieties, crop rotation, fungicide programmes, and forecasting models that predict infection periods. For food safety, blights matter twice: they cut yields and they can introduce toxins, making disease control in the field the first step in the farm-to-fork safety chain.
