Bdellovibrio
Bdellovibrio is a genus of Gram-negative, aerobic bacteria found in soil, sewage, and both fresh and marine waters. They are characteristically intracellular parasites of other Gram-negative bacteria, invading the space between the cell wall and plasma membrane, reproducing there, and ultimately killing the host cell. This predatory lifestyle makes them remarkable among bacteria and of interest to researchers exploring living biocontrol agents against foodborne and waterborne pathogens. Unlike chemical disinfectants, predatory bacteria are self-replicating and highly specific, though practical applications remain experimental. Their presence in water systems also reminds microbiologists that microbial ecosystems include predators as well as prey.
