Baskets
Baskets are perforated food containers — for holding or carrying — woven from strips of wood, bamboo, twigs, wire or other light flexible materials. Their open weave ventilates the product, and compared with solid containers, the increased airflow allows greater cooling rates and reduces condensation that encourages spoilage. From harvest crates to market displays and mushroom punnets, baskets remain practical wherever airflow matters more than airtight protection. Food-grade baskets must be cleanable, free of splinters and contaminants, and made from materials that will not taint the food, since their open weave can also admit dust and pests if storage conditions are poor.
