Ascochyta

Ascochyta is a genus of fungi in the order Dothideales that causes damaging diseases of pulse crops. Ascochyta pisi, for example, produces leaf spot and pod lesions on peas, cutting yield and degrading seed quality. For the food supply the significance is agricultural rather than toxicological: infected legume crops mean smaller protein harvests, downgraded grain, and greater reliance on fungicide programmes, with cost and residue implications. Management combines resistant varieties, certified disease-free seed, crop rotation, and timely fungicide application within approved limits. Plant pathologists monitor Ascochyta blights closely because pulses are a cornerstone of affordable plant protein worldwide.
