Antimicrobial packaging films
Packaging films — polyethylene is the classic base — impregnated with an antimicrobial substance such as chlorine dioxide, silver ions or volatile essential oils. The goal is to suppress microbial growth on the food surface and stretch shelf life beyond what barrier properties alone can deliver, with the active agent migrating to the food or acting in the package headspace. Because the antimicrobial is deliberately transferred to food, regulators assess these materials as food-contact substances with migration limits, and efficacy must be demonstrated against the actual spoilage and pathogenic flora of the target product under realistic storage conditions.
