Anacystis
A genus of cyanobacteria in the family Cyanophyceae — among the simplest photosynthetic organisms on earth. The species Anacystis nidulans has been studied as a candidate for single-cell protein production, since cyanobacteria convert sunlight, water and mineral salts directly into protein-rich biomass without needing arable land. Commercial food use remains modest beside better-known microalgae such as Chlorella and Spirulina, but the genus illustrates the long scientific interest in algae as sustainable protein. Like other cyanobacteria, some strains can produce toxins under bloom conditions, so any food application demands strict strain selection and monitoring.
