Peppermint
Peppermint is the common name for Mentha piperita, a hybrid mint whose leaves are used as a spice and flavoring. When added to foods or beverages, peppermint imparts a fresh, cool sensation and a clean, sweet-herbaceous aroma, largely due to its menthol content. It flavors confectionery, chewing gum, teas, desserts, and beverages, and its essential oil is used in small doses as a potent flavoring and fragrance ingredient. In food processing, peppermint must be dosed carefully because its cooling intensity can dominate a product. Quality depends on leaf condition, oil content, and drying, while related species such as spearmint offer milder, less cooling alternatives for different applications.
