Oxygen scavengers

Oxygen scavengers, also termed oxygen absorbers, are packaging components that remove oxygen from the headspace of food containers and keep concentrations minimal. This restraint on oxygen inhibits microbial and insect growth plus oxidative chemistry, improving the stability and shelf life of packaged goods. Iron-powder sachets are the most familiar format, though scavenging polymers integrated into films also exist. In food packaging technology, they protect oxygen-sensitive items such as fats, cured meats, and roasted coffee from staling and rancidity. Selection depends on required absorption rate, package volume, and regulatory clearance for food contact. Combined with barrier films, scavengers deliver robust shelf-life extension.
