A mycotoxin produced by Aspergillus versicolor — an orange pigment that is a biosynthetic precursor of sterigmatocystin and ultimately aflatoxin. Versicolorin sits on the aflatoxin biosynthetic pathway: A. versicolor and related species elaborate it in stored cereals, nuts, and damp building materials. While less studied than aflatoxin itself, its presence signals a toxigenic Aspergillus population capable of producing more potent carcinogens. Control is therefore identical to aflatoxin prevention — rapid drying, moisture-proof storage, and rejection of visibly mouldy lots. Versicolorin illustrates why mycotoxin management targets the producing organisms and conditions rather than single compounds alone.
